Ant-Man (Spoiler-Free) Review - 4 1/2 Stars

THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER-FREE!!

Come one come all. Come see the incredible shrinking man. I bring to you Ant-Man. At first glance at the title most people will shy away from wanting to see this movie. But believe me when I say that you will want to look closer.

Ant-Man is the latest superhero addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This film is more of a heist film than it is a typical Marvel superhero film. Think Oceans Eleven meets Spider-man. Ant-Man tells the story of Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd), a thief who is asked to get into a shrinking suit to help a billionaire scientist (Hank Pym - the original Ant-Man) get back his company and technology from a protege who seeks to use it as a weapon for evil. I like that this story is not an origin story. In this story the Ant-Man has already been saving lives and is a myth among men. The story focuses on Scott Lang who is trying to find redemption and rekindle his relationship with his daughter after serving time in prison. He has a criminal crew with him brilliantly and hilariously played by Michael Pena, T.I. and David Dastmalchian. They are his sidekicks and help him get back into the life of crime but ultimately lead him to the meeting of Hank Pym played by Michael Douglas. Hank Pym who is the original Ant-Man and creator of the suit gives us the origin story while training Scott Lang to become the new Ant-Man. Michael Douglas as Hank Pym is played with so much gravitas. He commands the role. Loved him! We are also introduced to Hank's daughter Hope Van Dyne played by Evangeline Lilly. She was a great addition to the story-line as she plays the part of someone who is trying to connect back to her father as well as service the new protege taking over her father's company. The villain Darren Cross AKA YellowJacket played by Corey Stoll felt kinda flat to me. Aside from Loki, Marvel has a problem with really grasping at a good villain and giving them a strong enough reason to turn to evil.

Other than the villain the characters in this film are so well balanced. The amount of humor that each character brings to table is astounding. Michael Pena stole the scenes that he was in each time. At first I was kind of worried that he would get on my nerves but by the middle of the film, I was wanting more. I can't count the amount of times throughout this film that the audience was laughing hysterically. The film is played up more of a comedy than it it is a typical superhero action flick. I feel this approach was a great way to bring the general audience into this "tiny" universe along with the comic book fans. It's has a very simple plot and the paint by numbers good vs evil scenario. I love that! It doesn't play up to be this over the top action drag out movie. It's just complete fun!! If you are coming off of a Avengers: Age of Ultron high then this is a completely different pace and might throw you off. The handling of the shrinking scenes with macro photography was so good. It brings you into the world of the ants and small adventures. The action sequences, the technique of the shrinking technology works and CG of the ants were so awesome! There are tons of easter eggs in the movie for comic book fans and the director reminds us of the connecting Marvel films very well without beating everyone over the head with it. Make sure to stay to the complete end credits to see two post-credit Marvel scenes.

This movie is in my top 3 standalone Marvel superhero films along with Captain America: Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. It brings tons of fun and action to the film and gives the general audience a new take on a superhero. The villain needed some work and some would say that the pacing could have been sped up some in the beginning. But overall it is a fun ride to be had by others. I can't wait to see this again!

So should you come to the circus to see the incredible shrinking man....oh yeah!!!

Inside Out - 5 Stars

BEWARE PLOT SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW!!! IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE YOU ARE GOING TO BE SPOILED! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Inside Out is an original movie about a girl who is growing up and us as the audience connecting with her emotions. It brings to life the understandings of what it's like to feel joy, sadness, anger, disgust and fear. Pixar does a great job of adding all of these feelings to the dialogue and animation. This actually is the first time that I felt as though it's the most "grown up" Pixar film. It's more serious than it is just silly to me. I think it's a movie best enjoyed for younger audiences if you are between the ages of 10 to 18. There are some jokes and feelings I don't think anyone under the age of 10 would get. The bottom line of the movie and what I took from it was that everything that we do or experience are dealt with mixed emotions. Or at least it should be seen that way. There is usually some sadness with some joy.

I'm not a parent but I can only imagine that your heart strings are going to be tugged at when seeing what this girl goes through. I know I definitely felt empathy for Riley while she was growing up. SPOILER ALERT!! One of the key moments for me that made me sad was when Riley's imaginary friend fades away from existence. I'm pretty sure we all had them as a kid (mine was named Todd). We shouldn't have to get rid of those characters. Being imaginative is what keeps us growing creatively. At least it does for me. Which is probably why I'm so silly and friendly. SPOILER ALERT!! The main plot point is that Riley goes through so many emotions when her parents decide to move away to San Francisco. If you've gone through moving from a long lived location because a parent has to change jobs or whatever, it can be really hard for a child. Growing up in a military environment, I know first hand what's it like moving from place to place. I can remember to the moment when my family and I left my best friend and my first "childhood love". I don't think that my parents ever did understand the emotions that I was going through. This movie reminded me of that. I think I might have a conversation when them about it sometime.

The characters are well cast and the animation is superb. There is just the right amount of "emotions" written into the dialogue. I saw this movie in 3D but it didn't really add anything. I'm not a fan of 3D anyways. I wouldn't be surprised if this movie is nominated for Best Picture this year. It is in the same category as UP! for me. Overall this movie is about the need to feel and express all of your emotions whether it be sad, happy, disgust, anger or fear. We all feel them and it's okay. It's important for others to understand those emotions when you explain them. You can't tell me how to feel but I hope that you understand.

P.S. The animated short LAVA that plays before it was very sad. I enjoyed it but didn't expect that at all. Most PIXAR shorts have some humor with them but this one didn't. It kind of felt like an off way to start an animated film for younger audiences.

5 Stars!! A Must See!!

MAGIC MIKE XXL - 4 1/2 Stars

*cue the music* "Jump on it. Let's do it. Ride it. My Pony." - Ginuwine

That is the best way to start this review. Let me second say....bravo and you are welcome ladies! I think this what you wanted! This is not a movie to go see on a Sunday morning instead of going to church. This is not a movie to say "Hey mom, wanna go see a dancing movie?" This is something that you enjoy either late at night in the theater with your girlfriends or someone cool like me. Or you see it in the private of your own home and don't admit that you enjoyed it. Although I happily do.

My interest in the first and second Magic Mike was strictly to see the dancing performances. I didn't go into either of these films wanting to see any Oscar winning performances. These weren't the typical "Oh my wife dragged me to see this movie." type of situation. I wanted to see both of these films. I appreciate music and dance films. I don't make it a point coming into this review saying "Oh I'm so masculine and confident in my sexuality." My wife and friends know what's up. I wasn't really surprised to see that I was the only man in the theater. Okay now that that's out of the way...when I saw the first Magic Mike I was like it was okay. Entertaining it. Is that what what it's like at a strip club for females? Kind of what it's like attending a strip club for males I guess. This is sequel is NOT what it's like going to a strip club for males. Women do not perform like this for males!!! Why not?? If they did.......ooooh. Magic Mike XXL is exactly what I thought the first one was going to be. I expected to see a movie that was filled with dance performances that would make a woman feel the same experience she would in a gentleman's club setting. That is exactly what you get when you see this movie.

This is the first time in a longtime that I would say this is what the first movie should have been!! If you are a woman or male who enjoyed the first one...I'm 98% sure you agree with me on this. If you are a woman or male who enjoyed this one but never saw the first one...I'm 98% sure you might be disappointed if you go back and watch the first. This movie doesn't try to be something that it's not. I'm not saying it isn't without it's flaws but still. We follow along Magic Mike and the gang going to the Stripper Convention (is this real?) in Myrtle Beach, SC. We stop along the way to drag queen shows, convenience stores, the hospital and a southern home in Savannah, GA. There's a girl that Magic Mike tries to fall in love with....blah blah blah. Who cares. The moments that are enjoyed the most are the performances. I loved how the dancing showcased the women feeling sexy and worshiped. To me it was about ALL WOMEN are sexy. Not just the skinny ones. Not just the plus size ones. Not just the tall ones. Not just the short ones. ALL WOMEN. The dance performances were less about just taking your clothes off for money but about how the men could service the women. There is a line in the movie where one the dancers says something like...We never ask the woman what they want. We need to ask them what they want and how, then deliver more that what they expect. I agree and I feel like that is what the men in this movie were doing while having fun doing it. There was no shaming involved at all by the women or men. They were all cheering them on.The sexiness of a woman is talked about openly and without any shame or shade or even words. The same with the male dancers in the movie. Not at anytime during the movie when they were at the drag show or sharing a hotel room bed together were there any homosexual jokes made. Why would it be needed? And the women who were the audience of the shows felt as though they were picked up off the street real women. I can imagine that the casting director just went into a room and said "How many women in here have ever been to a real strip-club and would like to go to real show?" You're hired! I loved that!!

The cast was put together very well and the absence of Matthew McConaughey was filled by Jada Pinkett Smith with an added umph. At first I didn't know what to expect because her character seemed like a pimp to me but then as the movie went on I actually enjoyed it. Michael Strahan! What?!? Now that he is divorced...did he just decide to say screw it...I'm going to get my groove on???? WOW! I hope Kelly Ripa hasn't seen this movie because I can only imagine her feeling uncomfortable sitting next to him in the morning. GOOD MORNING AMERICA! Channing Tatum is going to break his neck, back, arms and legs if he continues to contour his body the way he does. AMAZING! I wish I knew how to dance half as good as he does. I told my wife that I was going to start working out and take some dancing lessons. I might have opened my mouth too soon. The movie was hilarious and fun without being overly dramatic at all. Some of the scenes were a little long and unnecessary. It is just a good time to have fun. I had a blast and I know you women did too. The women in my audience were laughing, cheering, and dancing. Now everyone can  go home and continue to think about those dancers. Just remember to still love and marry us normal slightly overweight average men. Please don't spoil the performances to others if you have seen this movie...just let them experience it for themselves.

Tomorrowland - 4 Stars

BEWARE SOME MINOR SPOILERS MAY BE IN THIS REVIEW!!! IF YOU DON'T MIND A FEW MINOR SPOILERS BEING REVEALED, PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW!!


Tomorrowland is a fun and imaginative sci-fi movie from the director Brad Bird that takes us on a journey to what the future of dreamers can be. Based off of the Disney dream or concept of Tomorrowland, this movie makes a promise to the viewing audience that anything is possible if you can just dream. Well let me start this review by saying from the trailers this movie had me dreaming that it was going to let me see what my dreams could be by taking me to Tomorrowland. Well it didn't live up to that dream. The movie had me feeling a lot like I was in a long Disney queue for a fantastic futuristic ride only to see that there were some hints at that in the beginning then when I get on, the ride is over. I wanna get back on. When we first go to Tomorrowland was the best part! It was so much fun but then we leave. I still had fun on the people mover ride going back but it takes too long to get back and when we do it isn't what we want. Don't get me wrong I really had fun watching this movie but at times it felt like I was watching two different movies. At one moment, I'm having fun and on Space Mountain as if I'm 10 years old again and then the next I feel like I'm in the middle of Men In Black and I'm fighting aliens. The movie has trouble keeping on track to find it's definition. I thought the directing and acting were very well done along with the special effects. George Clooney was labeled as the star but in reality it was the acting of the character Casey Newton played by Britt Robertson and Athena played by Raffey Cassidy that stole the ride. I want to see more acting from Raffey Cassidy. She was fantastic. The villain played by Hugh Laurie was just meh. The movie was also very funny. I was surprised. I loved the Easter eggs of Star Wars, The Incredibles and The Iron Giant.

The main issue that I had with the movie was the mystery and intrigue of the plot that didn't pay off when the big reveal was made. Why were we going to Tomorrowland? Oh I know so that I can give you a reality message and beat you over the head with it, over and over and over again. We get it!! I don't want to spoil it but you will see. To me it was a cop out! I was hoping they would have told me something else. Give me something original. Make something up!! Make us dream!

Overall, I still thought the movie was very fun and I had a good time. I was just disappointed. I wanted to go to Tomorrowland. That is the name of the movie for god sake. Take me there and let me stay there!  I was hoping to dream and I did but only to be woken up halfway or in the end to someone teaching me a lesson. No thanks. Put me on the monorail let me step off into Tomorrowland and teach me about the future. Thanks. Heck I would even settle for the Carousel of Progress and we all know how that ride is if you've ever been to Disney World.

I still give this movie 4 stars for what it was trying and the vision that Brad Bird was going for. If you see it, see it in the theater with the big sound and picture.

FURIOUS 7 - 4 1/2 Stars

SPOILER ALERT!! THERE WILL BE SOME SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

TOO FAST TOO FURIOUS....I THINK NOT.....

The Fast and Furious franchise is nowadays what Summer Blockbuster Movies are all about. With it's crazy over the top stunts, silly facial macho acting, heavy soundtrack, it manages to keep you on the edge of your seat and feeding your face with popcorn. I love the Fast and Furious franchise. The only exception was the 3rd one. Lucas Black's accent and Bow Wow's acting were too much for me to handle. It wasn't horrible but it isn't my favorite of the franchise. (I still own it on BluRay)

Furious 7 is filled with comedic action scenes (cars flying through buildings, jumping out of planes, The Rock gunning down a helicopter with a M230 machine gun) as well as a great ending to give a final sendoff to Paul Walker. As everyone should know Paul Walker died during the making of this film in a car chase. The director had to make a difficult decision on how to finish the film without him. I think he did a great job at it. The final sendoff will leave everyone in the theater with a little tear in their eye. I can't wait to check out the behind the scenes and commentary on the Blu Ray to see what challenges they had and which scenes included his brother as a stand-in.

One of the things that I loved about this film was that it paid homage to the previous installments with scenes like Race Wars from Fast 1 and including Bow Wow and Lucas Black from Fast 3. I loved the fight with Ronda Rousey but could have done without the cameo from Iggy Azalea. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been a great addition to the franchise since Fast 5 and he continued to deliver. In my opinion he has been a great big action star since the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Keep the action coming Rock but please no more Tooth Fairy like movies.

My only takeaway from Furious 7 is that it was a little long. The action scenes were so long and from the beginning to the very end almost. I felt very tense and unable to breath at times because they were so long winded and even though I knew they would make it out, you still had that feeling they wouldn't.

If you can escape realism or you enjoy the Fast and Furious franchise, I would definitely recommend this movie!! Sit back and grab some popcorn because this is a "popcorn" flick after all! Just enjoy the ride!

Just kidding. It would be funny to read a review like that. However I'm not kidding about the movie being 5 Stars! From about 15 minutes into the film to the end, I was hooked! This review is coming from someone who hasn't read the novel. My wife read it and told me a few things about it way back then but I didn't remember anything. From the clips/trailers that I saw, I still wan't that interested. I thought it was going to be boring. Not until the morning of the viewing did I remember that David Fincher had directed it. Once I remembered that, I got excited. As you may know he was the director of several thrillers and twisted plotted films such as Seven, Fight Club, Social Network and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. With David Fincher at the helm, I knew I was in for a bumpy ride.

The film is about a woman who has gone missing on her 5th wedding anniversary and the town is out to find her and the killer. Of course they all suspect that it is the husband who did it. Ben Affleck plays the husband Nick Dunne who makes you believe his loving marriage is doomed and is crumbling but is worse because of lies and deceits that are coming to the forefront. He is fantastic in this film! Very convincing and gave me a glimpse of what he could do with the Bruce Wayne/Batman character he is going to play in the future. Rosamund Pike plays Amy Dunne the missing wife with a performance that is Oscar worthy for this year! I don't know what other films I remember her from but I will definitely go back to see them. Tyler Perry has his best role yet! I'm not a fan of Tyler Perry when he is not playing Madea but he was fantastic in this film. Neil Patrick Harris plays the stalking ex-boyfriend with such a menacing force that I thought he was the one who kills her. David Fincher manages to pull out the best in all his actors! He is a director who is known for not just taking 3 takes to get the best out of someone but like 80 takes. It really shows in this film. I'm so glad that I didn't read this novel or pay much attention to the clips/trailers that I saw because it added that much more intrigue and mystery. The humor in the film was played in the right tones. I didn't know if I was supposed to laugh because I thought it was all going to be serious but it uses those moments in the best of ways.

The amount of twists and turns that this film took had me on the edge of my seat. It's smart though. I was able to figure things out as it happened but I couldn't figure out the next step. Just when you think it is over, something else happens. The shock and awe of it all had me wanting more. The moment when you find out that Ben Affleck's character is cheating on his wife with his student, I was thinking "Oh they are going to go there." The moment when he throws his wife to the ground, I was thinking "He did it! He is an abuser." But no! The moment when you find out the wife is framing him for murder, you feel bad for accusing Ben's character of doing it. But then I was wondering if he really is going to do it later. I loved the moments when she is telling her story of how she framed him. I loved the moment when she frames Neil's character of rape. And when she kills him.....WHOA!! My wife told me that was added and wasn't in the book. But she loved it as did I. The ending when she comes home and continues to manipulate him was insane! Once you realize how sick and twisted she is you want it to keep going! I even loved the way they ended the film. It is one of those, leave it up to the viewer to find out what happens next. Cliffhanger! It's not a cliffhanger to tell the audience that they are going to make a sequel but makes you think. I love those types of films. It is a-lot like the film Inception. Not everything needs to be finished or resolved.

The cinematography of this film was fantastic. The right amount of darkness and shadows to keep you guessing. The framing and pacing of the film was astounding. The musical score was spot on as well because it falls into the background when needed but still manages to be noticeable. I'm a fan of film scores and I wanted to just listen to parts without the dialogue. The fact that Gillian Flynn who also wrote the novel wrote the screenplay for this film, helps the film be more true to the original story. I liked that. More authors should do that if they can. You can change a few things but keep the meat intact. Adobe Premiere Creative Cloud was used for post-production of the entire film which has never been done before. It was flawless and really gives the post-production industry hope for what is to come. As an editor, this got me excited.

I don't how much longer I can continue to give this film praises but it deserves it. It's definitely not a date night movie and it isn't an uplifting one. I do recommend anyone see it who is into murder mysteries and if you are a David Fincher fan. This is probably my favorite of his. I really loved Social Network and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

5 STARS!! GO SEE IT!!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY - 5 STARS!!!

SPOILER ALERT!! DON'T READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM! THERE WILL BE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

"I'M HOOKED ON A FEELING! I'M HIGH ON BELIEVING!" This is the perfect way for me to start this review. I'm hooked on a feeling that this is almost and I'm very close to calling this my favorite Marvel film!! It is so good! Avengers is my favorite Marvel film of all but this one is so close to topping that!

It has so much going well for it and it is so hard to not love this movie. Whether you are a comic book fan or not, you can't come away from this movie without thinking you had a great time!

Guardians of the Galaxy is about a young boy who loses his mother and father and is abducted by aliens, becomes an outlaw named StarLord and then joins a group of other "heroes" (Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora) to form the Guardians of The Galaxy. StarLord steals a mysterious orb that turns out to be a powerful weapon (an infinite stone for the infinite gauntlet). Ronan the Accuser is after the powerful weapon so that he can get revenge and destroy the universe. The plot was great and very simple to follow. For an introduction to a weird cosmic universe to the audience that doesn't know these characters you have to have a simple plot to follow. It allows the audience to get to know the characters and welcome this new world. Or galaxy. No pun intended. This movie has so much humor for a comic book Marvel film and it fits the tone perfectly!

Now granted these are not the original Guardians of the Galaxy from the comics but they still add something from that by adding the character Yondu played by Michael Rooker. His character threw me off a little because he seemed like the southern character that he plays on The Walking Dead because of his accent but still was very good! He also doesn't have his arrow like in the comics or his fin. His character is very tough and someone you don't want to mess with! If they continue to use him in the next Guardians you will probably see more of why. Every single character is very fully developed and paid attention to for a equal amount of time much like they did in Avengers. This is very important because the audience doesn't know these characters and we are going to see them form as a team for the first time. In the Avengers we already knew them all if you had seen the previous films. Chris Pratt who plays Peter Quill/StarLord is perfectly casted! He is very funny, cocky and also has a great tragic story. He was very natural and to me created that same feeling that I had with Robert Downey Jr playing Tony Stark. I don't think anyone else can be Peter Quill/StarLord for me now. The comedic timing with Chris Pratt and all the other characters were great! When StarLord is dancing at the end during the moment where the entire planet is about to be destroyed was so hilarious!! His banter back and forth with Rocket Raccoon was great! Dave Batista as Drax The Destroyer was VERY SURPRISING TO ME!! I have never liked wrestlers turn actors outside of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. But Dave Batista did a fantastic job! Part of that is because of how they wrote his character and how they directed him! They used the best parts of his "acting" skill to the best of his abilities. They didn't ask him to do anything that didn't fit. His character is this muscly brooding alien who is in search of vengeance but talks as though he has a college education. Or he has read the dictionary a bunch of times. At one point during the movie Chris Pratt's character calls him a thesaurus! Which is exactly what you are thinking when you hear him talk! But it's fantastic! He is very funny and lands his deliveries perfectly! There is a scene in the movie where he actually is trying to complement his "friends" and telling them that he cares so much about them but is calling them names in the process! HILARIOUS! Rocket Raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper is another great character! He is tough and funny! He has a lot of brass to be such a "small" guy! His sidekick Groot voiced by Vin Diesel is great as well! He only says 3 words "I Am Groot" but the way he delivers the lines make you think he is actually talking. Rocket Raccoon understands what he says and helps communicate for him. The relationship between Groot and Rocket reminded me alot of Han Solo and Chewbacca. Very closely related!! Zoe Saldana is not an actress that I care that much for but she was fantastic as well as Gamora. Her character had depth and was very tough! She could take down anyone. I LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED SEEING THANOS!!! I have been waiting since the Avengers to see and hear THANOS! WOW! He is in it for a short while but totally got me excited!! Josh Brolin will be playing THANOS in the next Avengers movie. The little piece of him that we get here is perfect. The look and the voice it great! Ronan the Accuser played by Lee Pace was good but was kind of a smaller villain to me. He was kind of like Malekith in Thor The Dark World. He didn't really impact that much. I was more thinking of Thanos as the villain even though he wasn't.

I talked so much about the characters in this movie because they really stood out to me outside of the plot. The development of each of these characters and the relationship that they build is so impactful that you don't care if you can follow the plot or if the plot is too simple. The special effects were amazing! The 3D was used well even though I don't like 3D. The cinematography was something that was ripped straight from the pages of a comic! There were several times that I could have taken a screenshot and pasted right into a comic panel. It was great! The soundtrack was amazing!! Total 70's vibe from the front to back and it made since! The movie feels very much like an 80's action movie with tons of references and feeling. This movie attached to me like Star Wars did when I was a kid. This is today's generation of Star Wars. If I was a kid and had seen this, I would have wanted to own all the toys and comics.

The end scene with Groot dancing to Jackson 5 - I Want You Back was icing on the cake for me! I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan and it just put that extra smile on my face!

The end credits scene was the biggest surprise for me since seeing THANOS at the end of Avengers.  When they pan the camera over and you see HOWARD THE DUCK I ALMOST STOOD UP AND YELLED!!! I grew up watching Howard The Duck movie from the 80's. It was a horrible movie thinking about it now but one of my favorites as a kid! I've seen it almost 20 times. This makes me think that Marvel is actually going to come back and remake HOWARD THE DUCK!! He had the same look from the comics and I just am so excited if they go that route. I know the end credits scenes to these movies usually give you a tease to let you know about the next tie-in but this was just as good for me! One kid in the theater said to his dad "What was that?" and another kid said "Where is Iron Man?" REALLY??? The parents need to show these kids a thing or two. 

I highly recommend this film to comic-book geeks like myself and all movie goers. It gets a perfect score for me and my favorite movie of this summer! 5 STARS!! I might come back and update this review with more details later but I'm tired of typing now.
